About Robert Burns

Robert Burns was a famous Scottish poet. He was born in 1759 at Alloway and died in 1796 at Dumfries. Burns' poems and songs are well-known all over the world. Many people have heard of "Tam 0' Shanter" , "'To a Mouse" and "The Coming of the Wee Malkies". Two of his well-known songs are "Auld Lang Syne" and "Scots Wha Hae".

Every year, on January 25th, Burns’ birthday, Scots people all over the world gather together to celebrate his life and work. This is called the Burns Supper. At the Burns Supper the guests sing songs, say poetry written by Burns and eat a traditional meal.

Auld Lang Syne

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And days o'lang syne?

Chorus
For auld lang syne, my jo,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne.

And there's a hand my trusty fiere!
And gie’s a hand o'thine!
And we'll tak a right gude-willy waught
For auld lang syne.
